The Tuaregs are one of the few tribes of people that have been able to adapt to the harsh environment of the beautiful Sahara Desert. Tuaregs are found in Niger, Mali, Morocco and Algeria. Locally they are called the "blue people". This name derived from the dye used in the blue cloth they use for their robes and turbans. The dye from their clothing tints their skin a bluish color and they also are known to rub the dye into their skin to to protect it from the harsh desert sun. The Tuaregs are recognized primarily by their blue robes and turbans, however, they generally have fair skin and gray or blue eyes.

The Tuaregs (pronounced twah-reg) are primarily a nomadic population of the central Sahara. In Morocco, they primarily live in the southern desert area. They are believed to have originated from Berbers, though some may be descendants from the Jewish people that were forced to leave southern Morocco in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Tuaregs are Muslims, however, women enjoy respect and freedom that is distinct from other Arabian Muslims. Tuareg women are allowed to own property, divorce their husbands, maintain social status even if marrying below their caste and are not required to wear veils.

Presently only a few Tuaregs keep a nomadic lifestyle.

The Tuaregs are known for their handmade silver jewelry, their blue clothing and their distinct handmade leatherwork. Their unique artistry of Tuareg jewelry, leather with silver belts and Tuareg inspired scarves have been commissioned by Hermes and featured in their catalogue. The small, intricate geometric designs on tribal jewelry has been passed from generation to generation. The designs on the tribal jewelry is said to tell a story of their lives or their surroundings, however, the meanings of these designs are diminishing with the passing of generations.
